A 420ml hand-painted Arita-ware teapot — cobalt blue peony with gold accents — by Bunzan Kiln in Arita, Saga prefecture, where Japanese porcelain has been made for over 400 years.

Bunzan Kiln (文山窯, established 1953) decorates its work with the icchin technique: raised lines of slip glaze piped on by hand, like fine icing on a cake. The result is a peony that lifts off the surface of the porcelain with real depth, edged in gold.

The peony (botan) is the king of flowers in Japanese culture, painted here on lightweight Amakusa-stone porcelain. Generous 420ml capacity for daily tea or serving guests; built-in strainer in the spout to keep loose leaf out of the cup.
