A fan-shaped (ogi-gata) Arita-ware plate hand-painted with a crane (tsuru) motif — by Kouraku Kiln, one of Arita's oldest active kilns.

Kouraku Kiln (交楽窯) was established in 1865 in Arita, Saga prefecture — the town in Kyushu where Japanese porcelain began in the early 1600s. The fan shape is a traditional Japanese form: a flat porcelain piece cut to resemble a folded paper fan, used for serving small dishes or as a display plate.

The crane is one of Japan's most enduring auspicious motifs — a symbol of longevity, prosperity and good fortune, often given at weddings, retirements and New Year. Painted here in delicate overglaze on white porcelain.
