Arita Ware Penguin Soy Sauce Dispenser

A soy-sauce dispenser shaped like a penguin, from Yamachu's bird series — made in Arita, Saga prefecture, home to over 400 years of Japanese porcelain.

The round, slightly dozy eyes give this little penguin a calm, pettable charm. The monotone glaze is finished by hand with a scatter of silver dots across the belly. Like the rest of the series, it is a working soy-sauce jug: the spout is shaped to pour cleanly and stop without dripping, so it needs no saucer beneath it.
