A large Kutani-ware porcelain plate from HAREKUTANI — a modern Kutani brand from Nomi City, Ishikawa — featuring the Daruma motif, the Japanese symbol of perseverance and good fortune.
HAREKUTANI is produced by Toujudo Kiln (北野陶寿堂), a long-established Kutani ware kiln in Nomi City, Ishikawa prefecture. The brand was launched to bring Kutani porcelain into contemporary Japanese homes: brighter palette, more playful motifs, but still painted by hand in the traditional Kutani overglaze technique. Kutani porcelain has been made in Ishikawa for 360 years.
The Daruma is a round, weighted figure based on the Zen monk Bodhidharma. It's a Japanese symbol of resilience: knock it down, it rolls back up. Traditionally one eye is painted in when a goal is set, the other when it's achieved.
