A large Kutani-ware platter from Seikou Kiln — hand-painted with Hokusai's Red Fuji, one of the artist's most celebrated woodblock images.

Seikou Kiln (聖光窯) was founded in 1935 in Nomi, Ishikawa prefecture — the home of Kutani ware, where Japanese porcelain has been made for 360 years. The kiln is known for perfecting Kutani's overglaze painting and for developing modern lead-free pigments that preserve the brilliance of the traditional five-colour palette.

Hokusai's Gaifu Kaisei ("Fine Wind, Clear Morning"), known internationally as Red Fuji, captures the moment in early autumn when the rising sun briefly turns the eastern face of Mt. Fuji deep red. Here the print is translated into Kutani overglaze in a slightly raised, textured finish.
