A 10.6cm hand-painted Kutani-ware matcha bowl (chawan) decorated in the hanazume (花詰 — "filled with flowers") technique — the entire surface densely covered in painted blossoms. By Toujudo Kiln.

Toujudo Kiln (陶寿堂) is a working Kutani kiln in Nomi City, Ishikawa prefecture. Hanazume is one of the most labour-intensive Kutani decoration techniques: every visible surface is filled with painted flowers of different shapes, colours and sizes, layered in Kutani's five-colour overglaze. The result is jewel-like — a chawan that's as much a small painting as a tea bowl.

Sized for a working matcha chawan — wide enough at the rim for a tea whisk (chasen) to move freely, deep enough to hold the matcha and water without splashing.

What's good about it

  • 10.6cm diameter × 7.6cm height — traditional matcha chawan proportions
  • Hanazume (flower-packed) decoration in Kutani five-colour overglaze
  • Densely hand-painted surface — each bowl reflects many hours of work
  • Suitable for whisking and serving matcha, or as a display piece
  • Comes in a wooden gift box
  • By Toujudo Kiln, Nomi City, Ishikawa prefecture
