A Kutani porcelain mug featuring Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa — the most reproduced image in Japanese art, here re-rendered in Kutani's overglaze tradition.

Bizan Kiln (美山窯) is a Meiji-era Kutani painting kiln based in Nomi City, Ishikawa — the prefecture where Kutani porcelain has been made for 360 years. Each mug is hand-painted: the cobalt blue wave is laid down in layered brushwork over white porcelain, with the small wooden boats and the distant Mt. Fuji painted in by hand.

Hokusai's woodblock print was published around 1831 as part of the Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series. This Kutani interpretation translates the print into porcelain — a different surface, the same iconic composition.
